World History of December 6

1704 – The Battle of Chamkaur was fought between the Sikh Khalsa and the Mughal Empire. Despite being outnumbered, the Khalsa defeated the Mughal army. This battle is considered a turning point in Sikh history and helped to establish the Khalsa as a major force in India.

1849 – Harriet Tubman, an African-American abolitionist, escaped from slavery for the second and final time. Tubman became a conductor on the Underground Railroad, helping hundreds of enslaved people reach freedom.

1921 – The Anglo-Irish Treaty was signed, establishing the Irish Free State as an independent member of the British Commonwealth. This treaty ended the Irish War of Independence, which had been fought since 1919.

1997 – A Russian Antonov An-124 Ruslan cargo plane crashed into an apartment complex near Irkutsk, Siberia, killing 67 people. This was the deadliest aviation accident in Russian history.
